Trauma-informed Therapy

Psychological trauma is caused by an overwhelmingly distressing event or prolonged events in childhood or adulthood. For example, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bullying, bereavement, road crash, witnessing violence, war, or terrorism.

This can have a severe effect on your mental and physical wellbeing with symptoms such as difficulty in managing your emotions, feeling disconnected and physical symptoms, for example, anxiety, nightmares, panic attacks, exhaustion, illness. Certain experiences or events in the present might 'trigger' intense emotional reactions which are associated with something from the past.

Right from the starting point of therapy I'll help you to establish safety and regulation of your emotions. You will be in control of what you want to talk about and the pace at which we work.

I'll introduce strategies to help you cope and to manage your response to triggers. This work may take time and practice. I can offer both long-term and short-term therapy which may depend on the complexity of the trauma.

My aim is to provide a safe and confidential space to help you feel comfortable in talking about anything. If you do have any questions please get in touch and I'll be happy to provide any extra information and answer any concerns you might have about counselling.
